Speechless

Well, not quite - you know me - but pretty damn close. Arizona is, so far, breathtakingly beautiful, and I do mean that literally. There was a point along the road where I just had to stop driving for a second to take a couple of deep breaths. Too beautiful ... too beautiful to be described in words, or even be photographed (unfortunately). Photos cannot capture the grandeur of some of the scenery around here, and believe me, I tried. You'll see some attempts at the end of this post.

Anyway, where was all this, you ask? I spent the morning at the Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix, which currently has a Chihuly exhibit on top of all the wonderful cacti and other plants they have. I had a very nice chat with two of the volunteers working there - both had spent time in Germany with the U.S. Army sometime in the last century. (Did I mention there are a lot of old people here? And I mean really old. As Suzanne Westenhoeffer once put it: people retire here from Florida ...).

Well, after the DBG I headed for Flagstaff via the I-17 and then Hwy 89, which is a scenic drive straight through Red Rock Country, including the beautiful Oak Creek Canyon and New Age haven Sedona (which is a big construction site at the moment). Behind every turn on Hwy 89 there was yet another gorgeous view, another vista I couldn't believe. And this was a "minor" attraction, worth only a small mention in most guide books ... I wonder what awaits me tomorrow when I head over to the "big one", the Grand Canyon. Judging by today's experience, I'll probably sit down at the rim and have a good cry. However, I probably won't be able to tell you about it for another couple of days as I doubt the Bright Angel Lodge, my next stop, has WiFi.

P.S.: I love the looks I get from lots of men on this trip. Their eyes stop at my camera, then invariably move to their own and their faces get this really disappointed look. Today, one even asked me if he could touch it and look through it. Lens envy, anyone? *g*

P.P.S.: Thanks for your comments, everyone. I'm glad you're enjoying my ramblings.

Hey Beep :)

Really enjoying your blog and your photos. I know exactly what you mean about the beauty of the scene there, although I've never been there myself. Sometimes you look at somewhere and it's like it is entirely too much for you to actually "see", too big, too beautiful, too emotional and there is no way a camera could do it justice so sometimes you don't bother trying.

However the pictures you have taken are, like always, amazing. You really have such a talent for this and I know we all feel like we're there with you - even if you do feel a little lonely at times.

((((hugs)))

I loved your story about lens envy. The guy wanting to touch yours sounded so gay!

Of course, some of us know it's not the size that counts, it's what you do with it ;-)

You're doing great things with yours, even if it is a big one: I'm truly impressed.

And reading your blog on this chilly and wet evening (we've even got the fire lit!) has a very warming effect.
